laura ingalls wilder gingerbread sociable

I forgot to mention in my last Little House post that this weekend, Pomona Library hosts its annual Gingerbread Sociable in Pomona, California, on Saturday, February 6th, 2010 from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. If you're in the Los Angeles area, don't miss it!

Pomona Library is a famous Little House landmark because its first children's librarian, Ms. Clara Webber, was a long-time correspondent with Laura Ingalls Wilder. When the children's room was dedicated in 1950, it was named after Laura, who sent her original hand-written manuscript for Little House on the Prairie along with a note of thanks. She wrote,

"As you read my stories of long ago I hope you will remember that the things that are truly worthwhile and that will give you happiness are the same now as they were then. Courage and kindness, loyalty, truth, and helpfulness are always the same and always needed."

It's no wonder that Laura's books are still so beloved by so many children.
